Description

This is a simple feature that would allow a user to visit the front page of YTMND on any given date.

The theme would be modern, but due to the way we store data, from around May of 2005, we can partition data in a way that would allow us to calculate what would be in any content box on a given day, or time.

A lot of this data will need to be pre-calculated and cached, but I think it would be a great method to showcase older content that was deemed good at one time. It could also be used to retroactively add user awards, e.g. give people badges for being the top rated of a certain day.

I think this is best thing conceivable. Hopefully if you do it you give it a prominent link on the front page. Or maybe even its own box (replacing the All Time box) featuring Top Rated or Top Viewed as a This Date 'X' Years Ago box. Perhaps the year and box could change randomly every 15 minutes or every time you load the page.

If you could calculate Top Rated Today for days past that might be an interesting one to feature for people who visit every day. As it would showcase not only the big hit sites but also some 'fringe' sites and would show different sites each day.

And then of course have the header to that box be the link that takes you to the Time-Machine.
